Bosnian-Podrinje canton Gorazde, canton number 5, is the smallest canton in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It covers the area of 573,1 km² and has very favorable geographical position that extends over eastern slopes of Jahorina, Borovac and Klek on 345 m height above the sea level. The climate is continental with short winters and long, warm summers.
There are three municipalities within Bosnia-Podrinje canton Goražde: Gorazde, Foča-Ustikolina and Pale-Prača.
Before the war there were more than 37.000 people living in this area and that number was reduced in the past fifteen years.
Administrative, political, educational and cultural center of the Canton is in Gorazde.
Bosnia-Podrinje Canton Gorazde has always been a connection between the East and the West; in the east it borders on eastern neighbors of BiH – Serbia and Montenegro. Gorazde also has good road connection to Dubrovnik in Croatia and to central Bosnia.
Before the defensive-liberation war in 1992, this part of south-eastern Bosnia and the town of Gorazde were the Center of Upper-Drina region with developed metal-working, chemical and textile industry, good communications and large number of workers.
Municipality of Gorazde alone had approx. 11.000 workers and the pillars of economic development were companies UNIS „Pobjeda“ and chemical industry „Azot“.
The economy and housing facilities of this Canton were completely destroyed during the past war.
The concept of the postwar development of this Canton is reconstruction of the economy, which has a healthy basis and good perspective for strengthening, exploitation of considerable natural resources by making concessions, as well as promotion of agriculture, containing unused opportunities for development of rural area.
Bosnia-Podrinje Canton Gorazde has many natural resources, such as: water-potential, gypsum deposits, springs of drinkable and mineral water. There are also favorable conditions for production of healthy food as well as tourism potential of Drina and its streams, reach forests and hunting ground. All these areas make good investment opportunity.
The Government of Bosnia-Podrinje Canton Gorazde has created a good environment for foreign and domestic investments through different politics: incentives, good infrastructure and state-public partnership.
In spite of many problems that also happen globally, this Canton already now has admirable results in the development of the economy. We believe in the prosperity of this Canton, as well as that this Canton will regain the status of regional center………………………
