In the middle upper flow of Drina , one of the most beautiful towns in this part of our country, economic, administrative and cultural centre of Gorazde municipality and Bosnian-Podrinje canton Gorazde.
Gorazde municipality covers the area of 252 km² and has 31.582 inhabitants.
The town is surrounded by hills: Misjak in the south-west, Biserna in the south-east, Samari in the south, Gubavica in the west and Povrsnica in the north. At the foot of these beautiful hills flows Drina river which, downstream the town, on a distance of around one kilometer loses its real name and becomes artificial lake. The valley of Drina used to be the main crossroad and the main road in the area of eastern Bosnia.
Gorazde, as settlement, is relatively old. As trading place Gorazde was first mentioned in 1379 in the time of trade with Dubrovnik, when inhabitants of Dubrovnik had their posts at all important roads in Bosnia of that time and one such post existed in the place of present day Gorazde.
There are prehistorical traces of life in this area and archeological excavations witness that settlements: Popov Do, Zupcici, Podhranjen and some other places were settled by people of the New Stone Age. Settlements surrounding Gorazde: Sopotnica, Zidine (Kopaci) are the settlements from the Roman time.
There was no certain information on how the town was established or how it got its name, but it was known that the name of the town was first mentioned in 1397. There are lots of monuments from the Middle Age witnessing the existence of life in this area. These are mainly gravestones and standing tombstones.
There were several assumptions on how Gorazde got the name, but none of these was certain. The allegation of philologist Goran Vukovic that name Gorazde originates from Slovene word “Gorazd” is considered to be correct.
Gorazde is the only town from Bosnia and Herzegovina on Drina which has defended itself successfully during the war, so the town and its defenders can call themselves heroes with the good reason.
If we add the strategic importance of this town for BiH and the Federation, then Gorazde certainly deserves to become a center of Upper-Drina region, as from the time before 1992.
